Douglas County Economic Indicators - November 2022
The November 2022 Douglas County Economic Indicators are also available on the Southwestern Oregon Quality Info page.
Douglas County employment grew by 1%, or 580 jobs, from October 2021 to October 2022. The county remains 830 jobs below the number in February of 2020 on a seasonally adjusted basis. The unemployment rate has ticked up a bit in the past several months. Although the rate now sits at 4.9%, that’s still very low in historical perspective.
As the holiday season approaches I wanted to take a look at retail employment, which is typically highest in November and December.
The graph this month looks at 12 years of retail jobs in Oregon and Douglas County, with each indexed to the number of jobs in January 2010. Douglas County retail job growth lagged the state slightly during the 2010s. The trend flipped in 2019, and growth is now stronger in Douglas. Douglas County suffered fewer retail jobs lost during the pandemic, and currently exceeds the pre-COVID peak, which isn’t the case statewide. We’ll have to wait to see November and December’s data to see if strong retail is maintained through the holiday season.
