South Coast Oregon’s Economy:
Coos County gained 260 jobs year-to-year in April 2023 and Curry County employment gained 10 jobs over-the-year. Both counties continued to see gains in the public-sector. Both counties saw unemployment rates drop over the month. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1% for both counties. Special Topic: How Are Workers Distributed in the South Coast?
The special topic this month focuses on employment distribution by firm size. The pie chart pictured below, shows the share of employment each firm size category holds. Curry County has a majority share (51.8%) of small business workers, or any firm with less than 19 employees. Curry County has the largest share of small business workers in all of Southern Oregon, reassuring the notion that their economy is rooted in small business.
